GWALIOR: A jeweller in Gwalior lost gold coins worth Rs 331,000 after a customer allegedly paid with money linked to a cyber fraud, leading to the freezing of the trader’s bank account, police said.
The incident occurred on May 25 when a man visited a jewellery shop in the city’s Morar area and purchased two gold coins weighing a total of 20 grams. The customer made an online transfer of Rs 331,000 to the jeweller’s bank account, and the coins were handed over after the payment was successfully credited.
However, the following day, the jeweller found that his bank account had been frozen when he attempted another transaction. On contacting the bank, he was informed that the amount credited to his account was suspected to be proceeds of a cyber fraud reported elsewhere.
According to police, cybercrime authorities had directed the bank to place the disputed funds on hold, resulting in the account being frozen.
The jeweller later lodged a complaint through the national cybercrime helpline. Following a preliminary electronic FIR, the case was transferred to the local police station for further investigation.
Police have registered a cheating case against the suspect and are examining mobile phone records and address details provided during the purchase. Efforts are underway to trace and arrest the accused. The investigation is ongoing.
