Fire Safety Week Focuses On Training, Preparedness In Health Facilities

BHOPAL 5: Government health institutions across Bhopal district are observing Fire Safety Week from May 4 to 10, with a focus on strengthening preparedness and building response capacity among healthcare personnel.

Held under the theme “Safe School, Safe Hospital & Fire Safety Aware Society – Together for Fire Prevention”, the campaign includes oath-taking, quiz and poster competitions, awareness rallies and hands-on training sessions on fire safety and emergency response.

The programme places particular emphasis on high-risk areas such as intensive care units (ICUs), neonatal care units and operation theatres, where oxygen-rich environments heighten fire hazards. Staff are being trained in the use of firefighting equipment and standard emergency protocols to ensure a swift and coordinated response during incidents.

District health authorities have directed all institutions to review fire and electrical safety systems, including maintenance of high-load medical equipment and adherence to prescribed safety standards. Facilities are also being assessed for the availability of fire response plans and proper handling and disposal of flammable materials.

Orientation sessions are being conducted for doctors and support staff on emergency procedures, including protocols to be followed during “Code Red” and “All Clear” situations. The training is aimed at improving on-ground readiness and minimising risks during emergencies.

The Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) office has instructed institutions to undertake physical verification of fire safety infrastructure, including fire alarms, extinguishers and related equipment, along with ensuring access to user manuals and compliance documentation.

CMHO Bhopal, Dr Manish Sharma, said the initiative seeks to align health facilities with prescribed fire safety norms while enhancing awareness among staff. He added that the week-long exercise would help standardise response mechanisms across institutions.

Officials said periodic reviews and follow-up inspections would be conducted to ensure sustained compliance and strengthen safety systems in healthcare facilities across the district.
