A section of the Narmada-Kshipra pipeline burst near Bherughat on the Indore-Khandwa Road in Mhow on Sunday morning, sending a massive jet of water into the air and disrupting water supply in parts of the Indore region.
The incident occurred at around 7.30 am when residents heard a loud noise before water began gushing from the pipeline under high pressure. Eyewitnesses said the water plume rose to a considerable height and could be seen from a distance.
The force of the water caused flooding in nearby areas and damaged residential properties. Local residents said water entered their homes within minutes, damaging household goods, food supplies and other belongings. Family members moved to safety as the water level rose rapidly.
A temporary house belonging to a forest nursery watchman was reportedly washed away in the strong flow. A tin shed near a local roadside eatery was also damaged.
“Residents have alleged that the pipeline had been leaking for several days and that complaints were raised with the concerned authorities before the rupture occurred.”
The pipeline is part of the Narmada-Kshipra project that carries water from Omkareshwar towards Ujjain. Residents said the water flow continued for nearly an hour before supply was shut off and the situation came under control.
Several residents claimed that large stones were thrown up by the pressure of the water, causing damage to roofs and structures in the vicinity. Local people have demanded an assessment of losses and an inquiry into the incident.
The rupture also affected water supply in parts of Indore. Residents of the Tapti Parisar area near Treasure Fantasy staged a protest outside the Municipal Corporation’s water control office at Bijalpur, demanding restoration of regular supply.
Residents said they had been facing water shortages for the past several days and depended largely on Narmada water for daily needs. Municipal officials assured them that steps were being taken to improve supply and refill storage tanks.
The pipeline failure has raised fresh concerns over the maintenance and monitoring of critical water infrastructure in the region.
