Notorious dacoit Jagan Gurjar was allegedly killed by a fellow inmate inside Ajmer High-Security Jail on Monday, officials said. Police said the accused prisoner, identified as Vishnu, confessed to strangling Gurjar with a towel inside their barrack.
According to Jail Superintendent Paras Jangid, Gurjar had been lodged in the high-security prison since March 2026, while Vishnu had been in jail for nearly three years. The two inmates cleaned their barrack in the morning and later spent some time playing Ludo.
Officials said the barrack remained locked between 11 am and 3 pm as part of the jail routine. When prison staff opened the cell during a security round in the afternoon, they found Gurjar lying dead. Vishnu was still inside the barrack.
During questioning, Vishnu allegedly admitted to killing Gurjar.
Ajmer Superintendent of Police Harshvardhan Agarwala said the forensic team collected evidence from the scene. Initial findings suggest the murder followed a personal dispute between the two inmates.
Police said there is no indication of gang rivalry at this stage, and further investigation is underway.
Sources said the two prisoners had argued during breakfast earlier in the day. During preliminary questioning, Vishnu reportedly told investigators that Gurjar often taunted and harassed him over different issues.
According to jail sources, Gurjar was kept in a regular barrack during the day and shifted to a special high-security cell at night.
Who was Jagan Gurjar?
Jagan Gurjar, a native of Bhavutipura village in Rajasthan’s Dholpur district, was among the most feared dacoits in the Chambal region. He entered the world of crime in 1994 after allegedly killing the men accused of murdering his brother-in-law.
Over the years, he built a criminal gang with the help of family members and faced more than 100 criminal cases across Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The cases included murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, robbery, extortion and dacoity.
He was also accused in the 2019 assault of two women in Dholpur and had earlier been accused of killing a police officer.
In 2008, Gurjar made national headlines after allegedly threatening to blow up the Dholpur palace of former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje during the Gurjar reservation agitation.
Although he surrendered before the police on several occasions, including in 2001, 2009, 2018 and 2022, he repeatedly returned to criminal activities after securing bail.
His last surrender took place before Karauli Police in February 2022.
