Ink Thrown During Jantar Mantar Protest

NEW DELHI: A protest leader was hit with blue ink while addressing supporters at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Saturday, prompting a brief disruption before police detained a woman in connection with the incident.

Videos shared on social media appeared to show a woman throwing blue ink towards the speaker during the gathering. The ink also splashed onto several people standing nearby. Supporters intervened, and the woman was later taken into police custody.

Delhi Police said a woman had been detained and that an investigation is underway. Authorities have not disclosed her identity or a possible motive.

The incident occurred during ongoing demonstrations over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination.

Earlier on Saturday, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was shifted from the protest site to Safdarjung Hospital after his health deteriorated during an indefinite hunger strike, according to Delhi Police. Police said the transfer was carried out on medical advice and in compliance with directions of the Delhi High Court.

Safdarjung Hospital said Wangchuk was admitted with weakness and dehydration following a prolonged fast. Doctors said he was conscious and his vital signs were stable on admission, while medical tests indicated dehydration and low potassium levels. The hospital added that he had declined intravenous fluids, oral rehydration solution and medication despite medical advice and remains under close medical observation.

Delhi Police said some protesters attempted to delay the hospital transfer, but officers completed the process while exercising restraint. Police also appealed to protesters to continue their demonstration peacefully.

Some protest organisers alleged that police used force during the operation. The police have not publicly responded to those allegations, and Reuters/AP could not independently verify the claims.

Following Wangchuk’s hospitalisation, another protest organiser announced an indefinite hunger strike in solidarity. Other protesters also continued their fast.

The protest has been continuing since late June over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination. The allegations remain under dispute, and the claims made by protesters have not been independently verified.
