Venezuela Aftershock Hits as Survivor Search Continues

CARACAS, Venezuela: A 4.6-magnitude aftershock hit northern Venezuela on Monday as rescue teams continued searching for survivors after last week’s twin earthquakes, according to media reports.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the aftershock struck at a depth of 10 kilometres. No immediate damage was reported, although several aftershocks have been recorded since Wednesday’s 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes.

According to media reports, Venezuelan authorities said the earthquakes have killed nearly 1,500 people, injured more than 3,100 and displaced over 12,700. More than 770 buildings have also been destroyed.

Rescue teams from Venezuela and several other countries continued searching collapsed buildings in the worst-hit areas, especially La Guaira. Officials said rescue operations will continue as there is still hope of finding more survivors.

Acting President Delcy Rodríguez said schools in the affected areas will remain closed for another week, while electricity has been restored to around 75% of La Guaira.

The United Nations estimates that up to 6.8 million people could be affected by the disaster. Rescue experts said the chances of finding survivors are becoming lower with time, but emergency teams are continuing their efforts.
