The 7.2-magnitude and 7.5-magnitude earthquakes struck on Wednesday evening, causing widespread damage and leaving several people trapped under collapsed buildings. Rescue teams continued search operations on Thursday as authorities looked for survivors.

The earthquakes were among the strongest to hit Venezuela in more than a century, with tremors felt across the region.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the destruction caused by the earthquakes. In a post on X, he extended condolences to the Venezuelan government and people and said India was ready to provide all possible assistance.

“Deeply saddened by the devastation caused by the severe earthquakes in Venezuela. On behalf of the people of India, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Venezuela, especially to the families who have lost their loved ones,” PM Modi said.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States would provide immediate support, including search and rescue teams, medical resources and humanitarian assistance.

“The United States extends our deepest condolences to the people of Venezuela following the devastating earthquakes,” Rubio said in a post on X.

French President Emmanuel Macron said France was deploying an 85-member rescue team specialising in search and clearance operations. He added that France would work with European partners to assist affected communities.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said Brazil would support Venezuela’s recovery efforts and was assessing possible assistance measures.

China also offered support, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun saying Beijing was willing to provide assistance based on Venezuela’s needs.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan people and said Spain stood with the victims and their families.

Colombia’s President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella also offered support, saying Colombia stood with Venezuela during the crisis.
