Indore Plans Action on Water Conservation

INDORE: Authorities in Indore have announced a series of measures to improve water management ahead of the monsoon, including the removal of encroachments from lake catchment areas, tighter regulation of groundwater use and stronger monitoring of water quality.

At a review meeting on Wednesday, officials discussed the city’s water sources, groundwater reserves, supply network and sewerage system. Plans were approved to improve monitoring of water storage tanks and distribution through the Jalud and Bijalpur control rooms, while chlorine maintenance will be strengthened to ensure safe drinking water.

The administration also decided to identify groundwater sources suitable for consumption and restrict the commercial sale of groundwater. Tube wells will be registered and their usage monitored as part of conservation efforts.

To protect water bodies, rivers and lakes will be mapped and demarcated using watershed data. Encroachments in natural drainage channels and lake catchment areas will be removed before heavy rains begin.

Meanwhile, officials responded to complaints of sewage contamination in an old borewell, carrying out repairs and ordering the borewell to be closed. Health authorities are investigating reports of illness linked to contaminated water.

Separately, a leak in a major Narmada pipeline disrupted water supply in several areas. Officials said repairs were completed and tanker services would be provided where necessary.
