Bhopal is set to improve traffic movement and road safety after Collector Priyank Mishra and Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar carried out a joint inspection of major roads and junctions across the city on Friday.
The officials visited Polytechnic Square, Depot Square, the Smart City Road and Bagsewania Square to assess traffic conditions and identify areas that need immediate improvement.
During the inspection, the Collector directed officials to make left turns free from obstructions so vehicles can move smoothly, especially during peak hours. He also asked departments to improve zebra crossings, install proper traffic signs and ensure better compliance with road safety rules.
The inspection was followed by a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee at the Smart City office, where officials reviewed the city’s traffic management system and discussed long-term measures to reduce road accidents.
The Collector directed officials to upgrade the Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) by introducing artificial intelligence (AI) to improve traffic monitoring, enforcement and overall efficiency.
Officials also reviewed work at the city’s 16 identified accident-prone black spots. Improvement work is already underway at 1250 Square, Habibganj, 1100 Quarters and the Vyapam–Tarun Pushkar area. The Collector directed departments to begin work immediately at Govindpura, the Training Centre area and ISBT, while ensuring all approved left-turn projects are completed on time.
The administration also decided to streamline the movement of e-rickshaws, remove encroachments from roads and footpaths, and introduce traffic diversions wherever needed to reduce congestion.
To promote road safety, short films encouraging helmet use will be screened at multiplexes across the city. The administration will also reward helmet-wearing riders through the ITMS with restaurant coupons during selected campaigns. Government departments have been asked to ensure all employees wear helmets while riding two-wheelers.
Officials further decided to continue strict action through the ITMS against traffic violations such as riding without a helmet, using mobile phones while driving and travelling on the wrong side of the road. Measures to improve emergency care for accident victims during the golden hour will also be strengthened.
