Viral videos claiming that an app called BAT-BMS can remotely switch off lithium battery-powered e-rickshaws have raised fresh concerns over the security of some battery management systems (BMS) used in electric vehicles.
Several videos circulating on social media show people allegedly using the BAT-BMS mobile app to connect to nearby batteries through Bluetooth and switch them off while e-rickshaws are on the road. The clips describe the act as a prank, but many users have warned that it could put drivers and passengers at risk.
The concern is especially serious for e-rickshaw drivers who depend on their vehicles for their daily income. If a vehicle suddenly stops in traffic, it may not only disrupt their work but could also increase the risk of a road accident.
According to experts, some lithium batteries used in e-rickshaws are designed to work with Bluetooth-enabled battery management systems that allow users to monitor battery health and settings through dedicated mobile applications. However, if the Bluetooth connection is left unsecured or the default password is not changed, unauthorised users nearby may be able to access the system.
Experts say this issue does not affect every lithium battery. It depends on the battery manufacturer, the BMS installed and whether proper security settings have been enabled.
Cyber awareness posts shared online have advised e-rickshaw owners to change the default Bluetooth password immediately and disable Bluetooth access whenever it is not required. Public interest messages on social media have also urged authorities, including Uttar Pradesh Police and the cyber police, to spread awareness among drivers about securing their battery systems.
Experts advise e-rickshaw owners to:
- Change the default Bluetooth password of the battery management system.
- Use only the official battery management app recommended by the manufacturer.
- Keep Bluetooth disabled when it is not needed, if the system allows it.
- Contact the battery manufacturer or dealer if they are unsure about the security settings of their battery.
As videos continue to spread online, experts say improving awareness about battery security is as important as improving road safety, especially as the use of lithium battery-powered electric vehicles continues to grow.
