Bhopal: Women’s Congress workers staged a protest in the state capital on Saturday against rising petrol and diesel prices, alleging that inflation has placed an increasing burden on the public.
The protest was held at a petrol pump in the Nanakpura area, where activists carried out a symbolic “push-the-scooter” demonstration by physically pushing two-wheelers to highlight fuel price hikes. Protesters also raised slogans against the state and central governments.
The demonstration was led by Madhya Pradesh Mahila Congress president Reena Borasi. The participants said the continuous rise in fuel prices has severely affected the middle class, women, salaried employees and small traders.
During the protest, women workers pushed scooters inside the petrol pump premises, stating that it symbolised a situation where common citizens are finding it increasingly difficult to afford fuel for their vehicles.
Borasi said the government had promised better days but had instead added to people’s financial stress. She further claimed that if inflation continues unchecked, citizens may be forced to revert to walking or traditional modes of transport.
She also criticised the central government over its handling of inflation and cited the economic situation during the 2008 global financial crisis, saying the then Congress-led government had managed the economy effectively.
The Women’s Congress demanded an immediate reduction in petrol and diesel prices and concrete measures to control inflation.
