Strong smells may help deter snakes around homes

Strong smells such as mint, basil, garlic, onion and ammonia may help keep snakes away from homes, according to claims circulating online, particularly in areas close to forests, ponds and rocky terrain.

According to  media reports, planting herbs like mint and basil is believed to act as a natural repellent, while crushed garlic and onion can be placed or sprayed near entry points such as doors and walls.

Some posts also suggest that snakes are sensitive to smoke, recommending the burning of dried leaves or incense sticks in areas where their presence is suspected.

A mixture of lemon juice, vinegar and a few drops of cinnamon oil is also widely cited as a deterrent, along with ammonia, which is described as having a strong smell that snakes tend to avoid.

Experts, however, advise caution, noting that there is limited scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of many of these methods.
