The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition challenging the proposed renovation and expansion of actor Shah Rukh Khan’s Mumbai residence, Mannat, according to media reports.
As per media reports, a Bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant declined to interfere with the project and dismissed the plea challenging approvals for the proposed construction. The court reportedly observed that homeowners are generally entitled to make changes to their private property, subject to compliance with applicable laws.
According to media reports, the petitioner had argued that the project violated Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) and environmental regulations, claiming that additional environmental clearance was required. The court, however, did not grant the relief sought.
Media reports said Shah Rukh Khan and his wife, Gauri Khan, plan to add two residential floors to the annexe building of their residence in Mumbai’s Bandra area. The proposal was reportedly approved by the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority in January 2025.
The matter had earlier been heard by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which, according to media reports, dismissed the challenge after finding that the project complied with the applicable environmental and CRZ regulations. The petitioner subsequently approached the Supreme Court, which has now dismissed the appeal.
Mannat, a heritage property and one of Mumbai’s best-known residences, was acquired by Shah Rukh Khan in 2001. According to media reports, the Supreme Court’s decision allows the approved renovation work to proceed, subject to applicable laws and permissions.
