Indian athletics witnessed a landmark moment in Ranchi as sprinter Gurindervir Singh clocked a sensational 10.09 seconds in the men’s 100m final at the Athletics Federation Cup, setting a new Gurindervir Singh national record.
The 25-year-old athlete from Punjab became the first Indian sprinter to complete the 100m race in under 10.10 seconds.
Gurindervir becomes Asia’s second-fastest sprinter this season
The timing made Gurindervir the second-fastest Asian sprinter of the season, just 0.01 seconds behind Japan’s Fukuto Komuro, who clocked 10.08 seconds.
He also comfortably crossed the qualification mark of 10.16 seconds for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
“People used to say Indians do not have the genes for the 100 metres. I wanted to prove everyone wrong,” Gurindervir said after the race.
National record broken three times in one day
The competition turned into a dramatic duel between Gurindervir and Odisha sprinter Animesh Kujur.
Animesh had entered the event holding the national record of 10.18 seconds. However:
- Gurindervir first lowered it to 10.17 seconds in the semi-final
- Minutes later, Animesh reclaimed the record with 10.15 seconds
- Gurindervir then stormed to 10.09 seconds in the final
In the championship race, Gurindervir finished 0.11 seconds ahead of Animesh and crossed the line nearly two feet clear of his rival.
