8 Workers Killed After Molten Iron Spill at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant

Visakhapatnam: Eight workers were killed and several others injured after molten iron spilled inside the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant in Andhra Pradesh on Monday evening.

The accident took place at the steel plant operated by Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL). According to initial reports, molten iron at a temperature of around 1,600°C was being transported in a large container using a crane when the container reportedly lost balance.

The molten metal spilled onto workers who were carrying out duties below, causing severe burn injuries. Eight workers died in the accident, while several others were injured and shifted to hospital for treatment.

Rescue teams reached the site soon after the incident and launched an emergency operation. Injured workers were taken to nearby medical facilities, while plant authorities secured the affected area.

Officials said an investigation has been started to establish the exact cause of the accident. The inquiry will examine whether the incident was caused by a technical failure, equipment malfunction or any lapse in safety procedures.

The accident triggered panic inside the plant and also led to a fire in the affected section after the molten iron spread across the work area.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed grief over the loss of lives. State Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha spoke with district and police officials and directed them to ensure proper treatment for the injured workers and speed up rescue efforts.

The Visakhapatnam Steel Plant is one of India’s major steel manufacturing facilities. The incident has once again raised concerns about industrial safety standards in high-risk workplaces.
