MANILA, Philippines: At least 32 people died and more than 200 were injured after a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippines on Monday, according to authorities and international media reports.
The earthquake hit off the coast of Mindanao island at 7:37 a.m. local time. It was the strongest earthquake to strike the country this year.
Many deaths occurred after landslides and building collapses. In Sarangani province, a landslide buried several homes in the town of Glan, killing 13 people. Four more people died in other parts of the province.
Officials also reported deaths in General Santos, South Cotabato, Davao Occidental and nearby areas. Rescue teams continued to search damaged buildings and affected communities.
The earthquake damaged homes, schools and other buildings. Several structures in General Santos suffered heavy damage. Authorities also reported minor tsunami damage in some coastal villages.
Small tsunami waves reached parts of Indonesia, Palau and Japan. However, officials later lifted tsunami warnings after the threat eased.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr ordered government agencies to provide emergency help and support rescue efforts in affected areas.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology warned residents not to enter damaged buildings because strong aftershocks could follow.
Officials said the number of deaths and injuries could rise as rescue operations continue.
The Philippines sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region that experiences frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.
