Ahmedabad jewellery theft case: Salesgirl arrested for stealing Rs 1.66 crore jewellery

Ahmedabad jewellery theft case shocks city

The Ahmedabad jewellery theft case has drawn attention after police arrested a salesgirl accused of stealing gold jewellery worth Rs 1.66 crore from a showroom in the city’s Nikol area. Police said the accused, Harshida Shetty, remained absconding for 10 days after the theft on May 11, 2026.

Investigators said Harshida allegedly planned the crime with her boyfriend, Mayur Mali. After the incident, the duo travelled from Ahmedabad to Delhi and later moved across several north Indian states to avoid arrest.

Police officials said the accused returned to Ahmedabad after running out of money. Officers detained her on Tuesday evening when she allegedly tried to sell some of the stolen jewellery.

“The accused confessed that she carried out the theft with her boyfriend. Police are searching for the co-accused who fled with most of the jewellery,” a police official said.

During questioning, Harshida told police that she and Mayur stayed at a hotel after escaping from Ahmedabad. She claimed that Mayur disappeared with most of the stolen jewellery while she was in the bathroom three days ago.

Police said only a few ornaments remained with her at the time of arrest. Officials have launched a search operation to trace the absconding accused.

CCTV footage helped crack Ahmedabad jewellery theft case

According to police, showroom owner Darshanbhai Shah runs a gold and silver jewellery store near Anmol Circle in Gravity Shopping Mall in Nikol. Around 19 employees work at the showroom.

Harshida had joined the showroom nearly 11 months ago as a salesgirl. Police said the theft took place when the showroom owner had gone home for lunch.

Investigators alleged that Harshida concealed gold ornaments inside her blazer and quietly left the showroom.

The incident came to light in the evening when employees found a gold coin missing during a customer transaction. Staff members later checked CCTV footage and allegedly saw Harshida hiding jewellery inside her blazer.

Police said stock verification revealed that gold chains, pendants, earrings, mangalsutras and rings worth nearly Rs 1.66 crore were missing.
