The Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday demolished an unauthorised private office that was being built above municipal shops in Anand Nagar. The structure was reportedly being constructed by BJP councillor Rajesh Chouksey, who represents Ward 62.
The demolition was carried out by the corporation’s Building Permission Wing in the presence of police to avoid any disturbance. The office was under construction above a row of civic shops located along the roadside at Anand Nagar Square.
According to BMC officials, around 450 square feet of unauthorised construction was removed during the action. The corporation said the drive helped free government property worth nearly Rs 30 lakh from illegal occupation.
Officials said no illegal construction or encroachment on government land or civic property would be allowed under any circumstances. They added that similar action would continue wherever rules are violated.
Councillor Rajesh Chouksey reached the site while the demolition was underway and objected to the action. He said his earlier office had been demolished during a road widening project, forcing him to build a new office above the municipal shops to meet local residents and hear their grievances.
He also claimed that he had discussed the proposal with Municipal Commissioner Sanskriti Jain and had received verbal approval before starting the construction. However, despite his claim, the civic body went ahead with the demolition.
The municipal corporation has not officially confirmed any verbal permission for the construction and maintained that action was taken because the structure did not have the required approval.
