MP cracks down on water crisis as CM Mohan Yadav bans leave for drinking water staff

CM Mohan Yadav orders war-room monitoring to tackle MP drinking water crisis

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has issued strict instructions to officials handling drinking water supply as the state intensifies efforts to manage the MP drinking water crisis during peak summer.

The state government has banned leave for officials and field staff associated with drinking water supply systems, including personnel from urban bodies, panchayats, Public Health Engineering (PHE) departments and water corporations.

Collectors told to monitor water supply daily

Following directions from the Chief Minister, Chief Secretary Anurag Jain chaired a video conference with collectors and senior officials from urban administration, panchayats, PHE departments and municipal corporations.

Officials have been directed to establish central control rooms in every district and conduct daily reviews of drinking water availability.

“Water supply work must continue on a war footing and any irregularity in tanker distribution will invite strict action,” the Chief Secretary said.

The government also instructed collectors to coordinate closely with elected representatives and ensure uninterrupted water supply in shortage-hit areas.

Government tightens monitoring of water tankers

The administration has ordered strict monitoring of water tankers to prevent misuse and ensure timely delivery to residential areas facing shortages.

Officials have also been instructed to ensure that no electricity connection linked to rural drinking water schemes is disconnected.

The state government said it has released:

  • Rs 1,500 crore for borewell drilling and rural water infrastructure
  • Rs 55 crore for maintenance work through panchayats

Authorities can also use grants under the 15th and 16th Finance Commission for emergency drinking water arrangements.

Ganga Dussehra events linked to water conservation campaign

Alongside emergency water supply measures, the state government will organise large-scale public participation programmes during Ganga Dussehra under the Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan.

The government said water conservation activities, including cleaning ponds, wells, canals and stepwells, will take place across urban and rural Madhya Pradesh through community participation.

Ujjain to host grand Shipra pilgrimage

A major two-day “Shipra Teerth Parikrama” will take place in Ujjain on 25 and 26 May.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav will offer a 300-foot chunari to the Shipra river during the event.

The pilgrimage route will pass through several major ghats and temples, including:

  • Ram Ghat
  • Siddhavat
  • Mangalnath Temple
  • Sandipani Ashram

Cultural performances and devotional programmes will also be organised during the event.

Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan crosses 1.91 lakh projects

The government said the Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan has completed more than 1.91 lakh water conservation works since its launch on 19 March 2026.

According to official figures:

  • 90,814 dug well recharge works have been completed
  • 56,198 farm ponds have been developed
  • 29,096 water recharge projects have been executed
  • 115 Amrit Sarovars have been restored

The state has approved more than Rs 10,666 crore for the campaign, with over Rs 6,293 crore already utilised.

CM calls water conservation a public responsibility

“Water security is essential for Madhya Pradesh’s future and every citizen must contribute towards protecting water resources,” he said.

Dr Yadav urged citizens to actively participate in water conservation and described the campaign as a people-driven movement rather than only a government initiative.
