BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh mountaineer Jyoti Ratre has scaled Pico de Orizaba, the highest volcano in North America, and unfurled the Indian flag at its summit, adding another milestone to her distinguished climbing career.
Ratre reached the 5,636-metre (18,491-foot) peak in Mexico on May 30, 2026. With the achievement, she became the first mountaineer from Madhya Pradesh to successfully summit Pico de Orizaba.
According to Ratre, the final ascent began at 12:42 a.m. in freezing temperatures, strong winds and darkness. After a gruelling climb lasting 10 hours and 28 minutes, she reached the summit at 11:10 a.m., covering nearly 1,400 metres of elevation gain in a single push.
The expedition was carried out in temperatures ranging from minus 15 to minus 18 degrees Celsius, with strong winds making conditions feel even colder. Glaciers, volcanic rock formations and steep snow-covered slopes added to the challenge.
Ratre said the descent proved more demanding than the climb itself, but reaching the summit and hoisting the Tricolour made the effort worthwhile.
The expedition was dedicated to rural women across India. Before leaving for the climb, Ratre said the mission was intended to honour women who continue to pursue their dreams despite daily hardships.
Ratre, an Everest summiteer, has completed several major expeditions, including Mount Kosciuszko in Australia, Deo Tibba and Nordu Peak in India, Mount Elbrus in Europe, Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, Aconcagua in South America, Satopanth Glacier, Nagarjun Hill, Island Peak and Mount Everest in Nepal.
Her latest achievement further strengthens Madhya Pradesh’s presence in international mountaineering and adventure sports.
