MORENA/GWALIOR: Four passengers were killed after a rumour of a fire aboard the Khajuraho-Udaipur Intercity Express triggered panic and prompted travellers to get off the train near Morena in Madhya Pradesh, railway officials said.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening between Hetampur and Dholpur stations after the train was brought to a halt following emergency chain pulling. According to railway officials, passengers reportedly disembarked after a false alarm about a mobile phone explosion and a fire inside the train.
While passengers were standing on or near the tracks, the Patalkot Express approached on an adjacent line. Despite repeated warnings and emergency braking by the locomotive pilot, four passengers were struck and killed.
Railway authorities have constituted a six-member inquiry committee to investigate the incident. The panel will examine the source of the rumour, the circumstances surrounding the chain-pulling, passenger movement onto the tracks and whether any safety lapses occurred.
