US-Iran Talks Focus on Hormuz, Lebanon

US and Iranian negotiators met in Switzerland on Sunday for talks on a proposed interim agreement aimed at easing regional tensions and preventing further escalation of conflict, including issues linked to Lebanon and the Strait of Hormuz.

The discussions involved technical teams from both sides, with Qatari representatives participating in mediation efforts.

The US delegation was led by Vice President JD Vance and included senior officials Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Iran was represented by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Ahead of the talks, Iranian officials said Tehran had taken steps affecting navigation through the Strait of Hormuz amid continuing hostilities involving Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Under proposals being discussed, the strategic waterway would remain open for international transit for 60 days while negotiations continue on a broader agreement.

Iranian state media reported that Iranian and Qatari officials held additional consultations following the talks.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog said a lasting agreement between Israel and Lebanon would require addressing the role of external actors in the conflict. He said further discussions between Israeli and Lebanese representatives are expected in Washington later this week.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed concern over domestic economic pressures and the possibility of renewed public unrest, saying national unity remained important during negotiations with Washington.

Meanwhile, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remained close to pre-conflict levels, although some operators continued to raise security concerns.

Israel’s military said it remained prepared for any deterioration in the security situation, describing the current ceasefire as fragile and requiring continued readiness.

US President Donald Trump also warned against any actions that could further destabilise the region, while diplomatic efforts continued to secure a temporary agreement covering regional security, maritime navigation and tensions linked to Lebanon.

The talks highlighted ongoing international efforts to reduce tensions and support a broader diplomatic solution, even as uncertainty persists across the region.
